Charlotte Thomson is a 22-year-old Soprano from Carlisle, Cumbria. She has just recently completed her third year as an undergraduate studying for a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Studies and Opera at the Royal Northern College of Music under the tutelage of Sarah Rhodes.
Charlotte’s recent performances include the role of Laetitia in Menotti’s The Old Maid and the Thief in the RNCM Opera Scenes production alongside being a chorus member in Handel’s Alcina and Mozart’s Idomeneo. At the start of the year, she played the role of ‘Kaa’ in this year’s ‘Children’s Opera Project’; a project supporting music accessibility in schools around Manchester. Charlotte was fortunate to receive first prize in the Oratorio class in this year’s Carlisle Music Festival, she then received the Bowman Scholarship, awarded to the most promising young singer.
This year she has gained experience in teaching through various placements, projects and courses, all of which have assisted her in starting her own teaching in the Spring. She is very excited to begin a project in which she will be working closely with a primary school in Manchester starting in September. Charlotte is also currently learning German to assist her singing and future career ambitions.

Charlotte’s training began in choral music having being in Cathedral Choirs for 10 years. In May 2013, she was offered a hard-earned Choristership only 3 months after joining the Carlisle Cathedral choir. She then went on to hold the positions of Senior Head Chorister, coaching the younger members of the choir, Junior Choral Scholar and then a member of their Consort Choir.
With Carlisle Cathedral, Charlotte sang in other Cathedrals and churches and at many high-profile events, concerts, weddings and has also had appearances on TV and radio. She toured internationally to Latvia where she performed each night in sell-out concerts at various Latvian churches. Although her passion now lies with opera, Charlotte has kept up her love for choral singing through being a member of the St Ann’s church choir in Manchester since she started her degree in 2021, she enjoys the weekly rehearsals and services with the choir.

Her previous singing teachers have included Charlotte Jackson, Ann Capstick and Lorna Anderson. She is very appreciative of her learning experience so far and hopes to, in the not-too-distant future productively share that knowledge with younger persons in Cumbria. Charlotte hopes that her professional training at the RNCM and her consistent hard-working attitude and down-to-earth personality will aid her progression through her studies and ultimately lead to a professional singing career in the opera industry.
